Welcome to the English department at Sir Robert Borden High School. Below is a list of courses offered, with short descriptions. Please note that courses offered can change from year to year, and that up to date course offerings will always be listed on student option sheets and in Xello (course registration program). Families can also inquire about current offerings with our guidance team.
ENL1W - Grade 9 English
This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, media literacy, and critical literacy skills that students need for success in academics and in their daily lives. Students will analyse a variety of texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on language conventions and foundations. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 English course, which leads to either university or college level preparation courses in Grades 11 and 12.
ENG2D - Grade 10 English
This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, media literacy, and critical literacy skills that students need for success in academics and in their daily lives. Students will analyse a variety of texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. The course is intended to prepare students for either university or college level preparation courses in Grades 11 and 12.
NBE3U (University Level) - Grade 11 Contemporary First Nations, Métis, & Inuit Voices
Introduced recently from the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, this course continues building upon grade 9 and 10 literacy skills, but aims to celebrate Indigeneity and familiarize students with contemporary, as well as historical, Indigenous people and perspectives. The course leads to Grade 12 university or college level preparation courses.
NBE3C (College Level) - Grade 11 Contemporary First Nations, Métis, & Inuit Voices
Introduced recently from the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, this course continues building upon grade 9 and 10 literacy skills, but aims to celebrate Indigeneity and familiarize students with contemporary, as well as historical, Indigenous people and perspectives. The college level course includes more of a focus on pragmatic content and language use. This course leads to the Grade 12 college level preparation course.
ENG4U (University Level) - Grade 12 English
This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a range of challenging literary texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace.
ENG4C (College Level) - Grade 12 English
This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a variety of informational and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from various countries and cultures, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for college or the workplace.
OLC4O - Grade 12 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course
This course is designed to improve students' basic cross curricular literacy skills. Students will read and write various forms of texts, including information paragraphs, summaries, opinion essays, accident reports, public service announcements, and more. Completion of OLC4O satisfies the provincial literacy graduation requirement for students who have been unsuccessful on the OSSLT Literacy Test.
