Greetings to all SRB parents, guardians and caregivers:


Welcome to our new families joining the SRB community, and a happy return to existing families.  My name is Matt Gagnier, and I will continue to serve the SRB school community this coming year as Principal of SRB.  I look forward to welcoming our students back to school after a prolonged remote learning period and summer break.  School teaching staff will be returning to work beginning tomorrow, and will have three professional activities days before all students begin classes on Thursday September 9, 2021


I want to provide an update as our administration, office, and care staff teams have been busy preparing for the school year.  I apologize for the length of the update - please read carefully for the sections that apply to your child. I would encourage you to discuss this e-mail with your child prior to their return to school.  We are beginning this year with renewed hope for a return to in-person learning; this hope is tempered by our efforts together as an entire school community to ensure a safe and continued return to normal operations.  We will be beginning the year with the same safety measures in place with some alterations in our high school schedule, and our hope is to gradually allow additional activities and more flexibility when it is safe to do so.


COVID/Safety Protocol Reminders

  • All students must wear masks on school property at all times, except when students are eating lunch/during nutrition breaks

  • All students must complete the daily Ottawa Public Health screening tool before coming to school each day. Parents are asked to ensure this occurs prior to sending their child to school.   Students cannot come to school if they do not pass the screening tool.

  • If a student develops symptoms while at school, parents will be contacted for student pickup.  

  • All students will sanitize their hands upon entry to the school and the classroom using the provided hand sanitizer.

  • Students should wash their hands and/or sanitize before and after eating food where possible.

  • Students will have assigned seating to facilitate contact tracing.

  • Students will need to respect physical distancing, directional signage in buildings, enter and exit buildings using specific doors, and not gather in large groups during  unstructured time.  

  • Students across the school have been zoned by class and grade.  

  • School ventilation filters have all been changed and are monitored regularly by our care staff.  A new ventilation online portal is being developed by the OCDSB and will be made available soon. The school has also received additional HEPA Filters for classroom spaces that do not have windows.

  • There will be no cafeteria services or vending machines available to start the year. 


Vaccinations and Changes to Provincial and Local Public Health Directives

There continues to be discussion at many levels around vaccinations, and lengths of self isolation.  Schools work closely with the school district and Ottawa Public Health to implement directives and policies as they emerge.  The school or OCDSB will communicate as required.


Secondary ASD Program

For students in our ASD Program, teachers will reach out ahead of the September 9, 2021 start date with additional information.


Grade 7-8 Only

  • School runs from 8:50-3:20pm daily.  

8:35 - 8:50 Supervision Duty

8:50 - 10:50 Block 1, 2, 3

10:50 - 11:40 Nutrition break

11:40 -1:40 Block 3, 4, 5, 6

1:40 - 2:20 Nutrition break

2:20 – 3:20 Block 7, 8

  • Grade 7-8 Homeroom Teachers will be in contact before the first day of school with specific information about the first day to introduce themselves, welcome students, indicate class locations, designated entry/exit in the school.  

  • On the first day, students will line up in their designated class location on the back field, which will be clearly labeled.  Staff will be present and eager to help your child find their appropriate line.  

  • We encourage students to arrive to school as close to 8:50 am as possible. There is no supervision for students before 8:35 am.  

  • We encourage you over the coming days to walk your child to school to help them navigate if you feel your child would benefit from this, instead of accompanying your child on the first day. If you do need to drop your child off at school, please walk-a-block to avoid congestion and we encourage you to drop your child off in nearby neighbourhoods.  School access to parents/visitors is by appointment only at this time.

  • Grade 7-8 students will enter the school from the back of the school and should come to the Grade 7-8 field near the basketball courts and portables at the rear of the school.  More information to come including a map will be provided by the homeroom teacher.

  • Students will be together with their class and be remaining in their class for the duration of the day, with the exception of phys/ed and recess.  Students will eat lunch/snacks in their classroom.  Teachers will be travelling to their students.

  • Students should be prepared for all weather conditions as we do go outside rain or shine. Students should come to school with a spare mask, lunch/snacks, and a water bottle each day.  

  • We will not be using lockers this year for Intermediate students, as students are remaining in one location all day and will store coats/belongings in the classroom.


Grade 9-12 Only

  • School runs from 9:05am-3:05pm daily. All students attend school every day.

3:05 - Dismissal - students leave school property

  • High school students will be in a modified semester to start the year.  This means that students will have four courses in each semester (Semester 1 runs from September 9-February 2).  Students will have two courses one week, and the other two courses the next week. Students will have approx. the same number of days for each class throughout the semester.

  • Students will be e-mailed their timetable on Wednesday September 8, 2021, the day before school starts.  It will include room numbers.  There will be staff available on the first day of school to help direct students to class and teachers will provide print versions of the timetable for students as well when they arrive to class.

  • There will not be timetable changes unless there is an exceptional circumstance as part of COVID Safety guidelines.

  • Students will be assigned a locker in their grade zone; students must bring their school provided lock to school and register it with the locker combination.  If you cannot find your SRB school lock from previous years, we have replacements available through the main office. Information about lockers will be included in the timetable e-mail next Wednesday.  

  • A separate communication will be provided to Grade 9 students by our Grade 9 Welcome Crew (Senior students will be reaching out to Grade 9 students directly)

  • Grade 9/10 students will be entering the school from the front entrance this year, and Grade 11/12 students will be entering the school from the back entrance between the gyms from the parking lot.  Students need to maintain physical distancing during our staggered entrance/exit.  


Grade 9-12 Lunch - returns this year, with safety restrictions

  • Students will be required to eat in grade-based lunch zones for students who chose to remain in the school during lunch time.

Grade 10 - 2nd floor locker bay, foyer/near office and upper gym

Grade 11 - 1st floor locker bay and foyer

Grade 12 - 1st floor locker bay, first floor gym, and library

  • Students are strongly encouraged to eat lunch outside where there is more room to spread out.  Lunch is slightly longer than past years so this is a great opportunity to go for a walk with friends between classes

  • Students are required to remain in their lunch zones or go outside; students cannot enter and exit the building multiple times during lunch.  This is to limit mixing between classes/grades and maximize physical distancing

  • Students are welcome to go off property at lunch

  • Students must return to school property in time for their afternoon class.


Grade 9 Only

As part of grade nine orientation, student members of our Borden welcome team will be calling grade 9s on Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th to give them some instructions for the first day of school. If you get a call from an unknown number on one of those days please pick it up so we can get in touch with the incoming high school Bengals to give instructions for the first day and answer any questions students may have. 


Students with Spares or E-Learning Courses
For Grade 11/12 students who may have a spare or an e-learning course, we are asking that students are only on school property if they have a scheduled in-person class due to current safety guidelines. If you have any questions/concerns please see your guidance counsellor.


*** School Resource Drop Off ***

Please check to see If you have any SRB or OCDSB resources at home (books, chromebooks, etc.)  Please bring them to school on the first days of school where you can drop them off.  Chromebooks should be returned to the main office or library.


Student Arrival/Drop-Off

  • We encourage students to walk or bike to school where possible.  We ask that parents/guardians limit dropping off their children to school and use nearby neighbourhood drop off/pickup locations to avoid congestion where possible especially during the beginning/end of the school day.  

  • We are asking that students arrive as close to the school day as possible; students will also need to leave school property upon dismissal as we cannot have large gatherings.

  • For students that bike to school, students should lock up their bike on the back racks at the front of the school.  There are cameras for security however the school cannot be responsible for any bikes that are lost/stolen.


School Visitors

  • At this time, parents/guardians and other school visitors are restricted from entering the school.  Should there be an exceptional circumstance, please call the school to arrange for an appointment or for assistance.  We will be scheduling virtual/phone appointments with families where possible.


Student Absences

  • We are following the OCDSB in-person learning model; teachers will be providing instruction and supporting student learning that is occurring in-person.  All students will be attending school this year and we will not have at-home cohorts.

  • When students are away from school because of an illness, they may work on school work if they are able to by checking their teacher’s Google Classroom/Learning Management System for the posted work/topics/tasks.  This does not replace in-person teaching and is meant to help organize assigned work for all students.

  • If your child will be away from school, please e-mail srbattendance@ocdsb.ca to report the absence (name of your child, the reason for the absence)

  • There may be instances in which a student is required to self-isolate at home while they await COVID tests, or until they are symptom free, or are required to stay at home until Ottawa Public Health indicates that they can return to school.  School staff will work in partnership with you and your family during these difficult times in the ways that are available and possible.


Late Arrivals and Sign Out’s

  • If a student is late to school but arrives before 9:30am, they can go directly to their homeroom.  Their teacher will record the late arrival.  After 9:30am, students must enter their designated door and sign in at the main office.

  • Should you need to pick up your child early, please make arrangements ahead of time.  We want to prioritize learning time and avoid calling into classrooms.  Please send a note to srbattendance@ocdsb.ca and copy the appropriate teachers.  You may arrange to pickup your child out front at the prearranged time.  Please phone when you arrive so we may release your child once you are here.  


Transportation/OSTA Update

The parent portal is now open.  Please visit ottawaschoolbus.ca for families that will be using student transportation.  Please note that for students in the Cedarview Estates area, due to the school bus driver shortage, a coach shuttle bus (with 2 designated congregated stop points) or small van transportation will be used.   Students who are eligible for a Presto card will receive it when school begins, as the cards arrive.

School Accident Insurance:
Please see the following message from the OCDSB regarding student accident insurance:

Creating a caring and safe environment for our students is our top priority. Unfortunately, despite all reasonable precautions being taken, accidents can still happen. Some injuries may result in medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by provincial health care or employer group plans. As a parent/guardian, you become responsible for these expenses.

Student accident insurance is available for purchase, on a voluntary basis, through Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada. Parents may apply online at www.insuremykids.com or call 1-800-463-5437.

The OCDSB encourages all parents/guardians to consider purchasing this insurance.  The accident insurance coverage options range from $17.00/year to $33.00/year. This coverage is for the entire calendar year and also applies to accidents that occur outside of school hours.  If you have any questions, please call Binks Insurance Brokers directly at 613-226-1350.

Mr. MacQueen will be on leave beginning this year, and we are happy to welcome Ms. Christine Rankin behind him, who joins us from Lisgar CI where Ms. Rankin served as Head of English and Languages.
