Parent Update Sept 3

Parent Update Sept 3 for Grade 9's
Posted on 09/04/2020

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We are very excited that your child will be attending Sir Robert Borden High School! As you may know, our school participates in the Link Crew program - a program whose sole purpose is to help grade nines feel more comfortable as well as help them achieve success in their first year in high school. This is crucial this year more than ever.

The Link Crew grade nine orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support grade nine students by assigning them a senior Link leader as a mentor. This Link leader is a responsible older student who was hand selected from a large pool of applicants and has met the qualifications of being a good role model and a positive leader at our school. These students will welcome and orient the grade 9s on their first day, and then plan academic and social support activities all throughout the year. Following is some information to let you know what you and your student can expect in advance of their first day of school.

Please note: Parents/guardians are expected to perform the Ottawa Public Health COVID Self-Assessment prior to sending their child to school.

  • Grade 9 Orientation will take place on Tuesday Sept 8th for Cohort A (A-K), and Wednesday Sept 9th for Cohort B (L-Z), starting at 9 am and ending around 1 pm.
  • Lunch will be provided to Grade 9s in the form of Individually wrapped Cosmos chicken or Falafel sandwiches.   Please have your student bring lunch if they have dietary restrictions  (or you think they won’t eat this).
  • A day or  two before Orientation your student will receive a phone call (on the phone number we have on file - it may come to a parent’s cell phone) from their Link Crew Leader personally inviting them to orientation day and giving the details of where to be and what time.
  •  Link leaders will show Grade 9 students to their classrooms, and introduce them to their Period 1 teacher, their guidance counsellors and our administration. They will get a copy of their timetable and receive a ‘walkthrough’ of their first day.

  •  New this year - Grade 9 students will be in Link groups by cohort and period,  so they will be in a group with their period 1 class with only students from their cohort, to a  maximum of 15 students.  Their Link leaders will also be part of their cohort.

  •  Please have your student bring a mask and a water bottle. Masks will be worn at all times; social distancing will be enforced and they will sanitize hands when needed.

We look forward to meeting your student on orientation day!

Your Link Crew Coordinators

Jamey Pender, Dave Barbier,  Nancy Cronkwright and Sarah Leahy
