Parent Update September 2, 2020
Posted on 09/03/2020

Greetings from the Staff at SRB,

I hope this email finds you well.  My name is Matt Gagnier and I will be serving as Principal of Sir Robert Borden this year behind Paula Reynolds-Hall.  I have been working on transition over the past couple of weeks prior to her leaving on maternity leave. I look forward to serving the students, staff and parents of the SRB community this year.  School staff returned to work this week for professional development days and planning for the year.  Our priority is welcoming our students back to school safely, and creating positive learning outcomes for students.

There have been some updates over the past week around staggered starts from the OCDSB; please see information below related to SRB.  A separate email will follow tomorrow for Grade 9 students Link Crew Orientation.

Grade 7-8

  • The staggered start will be as follows:

    • Grade 7 In Person Start - September 14 (Only Grade 7’s in attendance)

    • Grade 8 In Person Start - September 15  (Grade 7 and Grade 8 in attendance)

    • Students in Grade 7-8 who registered for Virtual School will begin on September 18. More information will be provided to families in the coming days by the OCDSB Virtual School. Please note, as Virtual School is being developed by the OCDSB, SRB does not have any additional information about the school.

  • Homeroom Grade 7 and 8 Teachers will be in contact with families next week

  • We will be updating the school website in the coming days with additional information

  • The school day is from 8:50-3:20.  Student arrival cannot be prior to 8:35.

Grade 9-12

  • Grade 9-12 students attending in-person will be following the quadmaster model, with one course being taught during 1 week, and then the 2nd course during the next. The OCDSB sent out this graphic last week.

    • Although the graphic appears to have students attending one course more than the other, over the entire quadmester, students will have approximately the same number of total classes for both courses.

    • Students will be cohorted to allow for classes of approximately 15 students.

      • Cohort A will include students with last names A-K

      • Cohort B will include students with last names L-Z.

  • The staggered start will be as follows:

    • Tuesday September 8 - Grade 9 Cohort A (Last Name A-K) Link Crew Orientation

    • Wednesday September 9 - Grade 9 Cohort B (Last Name L-Z) Link Crew Orientation

    • Thursday September 10 - Grade 9-12 Cohort A (Last Name A-K) Regular Classes Begin

    • Friday September 11 - Grade 9-12 Cohort B (Last Name L-Z)

    • Students in ASD Program classes will have Transition Days on September 8-9, and begin on September 10.  OSTA will be in communication around transportation, and teachers in the ASD program will be reaching out directly to families.

    • Secondary Classes run from 9:15am-1:12pm.  See the OCDSB graphic. Students can arrive between 9:00-9:15am for a staggered entry into the building, but cannot arrive before this.

    • Students in Secondary who registered for Virtual School will begin on September 18. More information will be provided to families in the coming days by the OCDSB Virtual School. Please note, as Virtual School is being developed by the OCDSB, SRB does not have any additional information about the school.

The creation of the OCDSB Virtual school is well underway; this required SRB to make changes to our school timetable.

  • At this time, outside of timetable courses are not able to be offered (however music courses will run inside the timetable as previously scheduled).

  • Guidance will be in touch If you child has any gaps in their schedule as a result of timetable changes.

  • Due to safety reasons, there will be limits on timetable changes as it has an impact on cohorting of students.

  • Students will receive their timetable on the first day they are scheduled for school as we continue to finalize staffing.

Important Change to Student Drop-offs at SRB

  • Historically, SRB has experienced issues relating to a high volume of parents dropping off students who are in walking distance of our school. This has caused significant congestion and safety concerns. This year we anticipate with delays in transportation and more parents not wanting to assess OC Transpo, this issue will be exasperated. Beginning September 2020, parents are asked not to drop students off on SRB/OCDSB property. If you will be driving your child to school, please drop your child off in one of our nearby neighbourhoods close to SRB and ask your child to take the short walk to school. If your child has a mobility issue or special need, please contact the school if you need to request a drop off directly on property.

  • Given health and safety measures, physical distancing, and hand sanitation requirements when students enter the building, we are asking that families not drop off their children until 15 minutes before the day starts (8:35-8:50 for Grade 7-8, 9:00-9:15 for Grade 9-12).

Transportation - OSTA Update

  • More information to come around Student Presto Cards - we will be distributing them once we receive them, after school begins for students.

  • Students arriving at school via OSTA Yellow School Bus - service begins on September 14.

Textbook Liabilities, Uniforms or Instruments

  • If you have any school textbooks or library books, uniforms or instruments, there is a drop off bin placed between the double doors in the main entrance of the school.  Please curb-side drop off at your convenience, or send with your child when they return to school. Please ensure everything is labelled with your child’s name using masking tape or a post-it note.

If you have any additional questions, please contact the school at 613-829-5320.  Many thanks in advance as we continue to plan for a safe and welcoming school startup.
